Toldos

Where was the evacuation plan untill now?! Did rivkah need ruach hakodesh to inform her of eisav's plan to realize that stealing the brachos will not promote brotherly love?!

Also rivkah told yakov "misnachem alecha L'hargecha" - as Rashi explains so sure is your death in his eyes that he already drank the cup of consolation over your death! - why was it so sure?

One explanation of Eisav plan for yikrivu yimei eivel avi, is not just that eisav was waiting for his father's death, rather he was anticipating the eivel - mourning of yakov over their father, since then he will not be able to study Torah & he will lack its protection.

The medrash Rabbah however says that here eisav shemed with patience & a settled mind.
The ramban 25.34 says eisav - as all balei ta'avah, was all about the instant , here & now. he was hurried, rushed & very "advanced".

perhaps we can say untill this point, for all his hatred & anger towards ya'akov, there wasn't much to be concerned about because of his hasty quick decisions. But here Ruach HaKodesh informed her of eisav's words - not just of his desire to kill, but the detailed, long term, thought out, plan.
This was the only time there was real concern - because with patience & yishuv hadas the plan is sure to work. That is why rivakah stressed the sureness of his plan with the fact that eisav already drank the kos tanchumin.

we see from here the value of patience....a long lost art in the fast paced advanced world.
Yet this is a character trait that has been classic of our nation, as we have patiently waited for the geulah. Though HASHEM has expectations of us inimproving ourselves, one ma'alah we've always had. - Af al pi sheyismamei'ah, I'm kol zeh achakeh lo....

Let us not lose this trait & subject ourselves to the 'ahead of the game' rush of eisav. We must learn to keep this midah in ourselves & find ways to instill this rare & precious midah in our children.

Chayei sarah

there is a well known "stirah" between Avraham telling the bnei ches "ger v'toshav", which Rashi explains he claimed rights to the land. & yet in lech l'cha - "vayehi riv", rashi says that LOT's shepherds believed they had rights but Avraham argued that for now (till the cna'ani are gone) it was not yet his to have any claim?

Maran answered 'ein kinyan L'akum b'eretz yisrael" (gittin 47a) to absolve mitzvos but "yesh kinyan" to dig up the land... Meaning that the monetary kinyan over the land & the spiritual kinyan is split.

Similarly, the invauable me'oras hamachpelah wasn't a mekach ta'us b/c Efron only had access & ownership to the material monetary value. (Zohar)

Therefore we can say the cna'anim only had monetary rights so long as they were there... In lech l'cha the dispute was just regarding money grazing in others' fields. That Avraham did not allow. But here the malbim (& others) point out thet Avraham specifically made a public spectacle & numerous announcements that he was purchasing the land for kevurah - this was a spiritual endeavor - both on a personal level & as a lesson for mankind about the afterlife & appropriate regard for the body after the neshamah departs. Regarding this an akum does not own eretz yisrael, & Avraham had a claim.

We see that in one item it is possible to have a completely divided ownership, between the material & the spiritual.

In the aftermath of Sandy the mashgiach shlitah asked me with a tone of critique "nu & what was with our na'anu'im?" - of course Sandy was not a punishment for a lack of proper lulav shaking, but whtever sandy was for, we know that the shaking of lulav should protect against destructive winds.... - so what was with them?
Surely we shook the the lulav as described in halacha, but perhaps it was just the material shaking without "RUACH".

Perhaps we can try to instill positive "ruach" into our mitzvos & even more specifically - we can surely add a good dose of ruach to thanking Hashem in modim anachnu, that we've been spared the brunt of the storm.

May the strong infuence of positive Ruach into all of our deeds prevent any more Ruchos Ra'os from coming upon the world.

Lech L'cha

Rashi seems like naturally traveling diminishes the 3 things & therefore Avraham needed brachos. Medrash says mashal like bottle of perfume that only by moving it around can its scent be smelled. - seems like it was natural?

Many ask what was taking so long that our parsha begins w Avraham at age 75?

Rashi says that Hashem told avraham to leave home to make known 'tiv'acha' - your nature. - that's what took long - for avraham's great maalos to become ingrained as his NATURE. - that is why we call them our avos. - the challenges they overcame became part of their - & our d.n.a.

For someone who's ma'alos are not yet his teva, travel will further shake them from becoming established. However now - @ 75 when they became Avraham's teva, then like the perfume the aroma will be noticed by all & not diminished.
So rashi says Hashem assured avaraham with the blessing that these ma'alos will grow & not leave him. - a bracha only brings out the natural quality that's already there.

One ma'aloh the medrash says about avraham is that he was 'om ani choma' - he withstood all the currents of the world that were against him.

Thae character that we inherit from the avos is in our nature & needs little effort to bring into action.

B'cha chosmin' - with your zechus will be the closing statement & geulah.

Re'eh

E. Nussbaum said from his father not to use a cerain shochet based on his children not being on the right track. - if all kids are like that something's missing in father, & choshesh that his sensitivity to feel the chalaf is lost.

the Maggid meishorim explains what re'eh - seeing the blessing means & why the 1st passuk in re'eh starts in singular & ends L'fneichem - plural.
He says that brachah is an entity that exists, not just an occurrence & one with very good eyes can actually see it! So Moshe was telling the few individuals (in singular tense) with 'good
eyesight' to look & actually see the bracha & k'llalah that is being placed before ALL of kllal yisrael (plural tense) on har grizim & har eival.

Shechitah needs a very sensitive nail to make sure the tool that makes an animal appropriate to become one with man is smooth with no bumps to caus the animal pain in the process.
Presumably, that sensitivity is dependant on one's level of purity in bein adam LaMakom.

As R' Yisrael Salanter said, bein adam L'chaveiroh is a lot harder than bein adom LaMakom.

How much more carful must we be then to retain the sensitivity needed to be aware & avoid any sharp painful 'bumps' when bonding people into one!

Creating true ahava achva shalom & rei'us is an extremely delicate surgery & we owe tremendous hakoras hatov to those who bring people together as they skillfully make sure all is smooth.


Part of what's needed for the people themselves to bond, is a good measure of light heartedness & humor so that not every nuance should cause pain & we should not be oversensitive.

If so - when you are open to brachah so much that even accept from goy, then you won't make ayin ra on self!

avos 3 midos define the talmidim of Avraham & L'havdil, Bilam. What's the diff betwween them? Their reward.

Only 3 midos?! They're not distinguishable - just by reward?!

In act they may be simolar but in the long run whta defines who they are & what's thei 'constant' - its these 3 not outwardly discernable midos.

Maharal - lev tov is genrous. Ayin tov wants others to be blessed with all.

if so - ayin ra here can't mean stingy, b/c that's evident. Must mean 'evil eye'.

onaas devarim rashi says giving bad advice. isn't that lifney iver? Also this is not like any cases in the gemarah? also why did rashi give 2 - don't agitate him & advice?
maharal aggados b.m. 58b "how much is this" is prime example of ona'ah which means to denegrate the worth of another tzelem elokim. Abusing him for your boredom is treating him like an object. The chidush is that the Other examples are ALSO onaah. b/c even though the words may hurt him he still has value as human just LESS b/c of old ma'asim..

Rashi didn't really say BAD advice, rather advice for the good of the advisor so its not lifnei iver 'michshol' . rather ona'ah. Offering advice for another as if to help him when it is actually for self, is
abusing, denegrading & taking advantage of the seeker's lack of wisdom.

Status level can't be sacrificed by being one of the boys. Maran - L'kach nivcharta elevated level of who you are demands up to mesirus nefesh!
